Mrs P. G. Stevens presided at the monthly meeting of the National Party garden circle yesterday. An interesting talk on .cloche-growing was given by Mrs T. W. C. Tothill. The drama group of the Mount Pleasant War Memorial Community Centre presented three one-act plays recently to an audience of more than 300 persons. The producer was Miss Majorie Bassett, and those taking part included Mesdames N. Radcliffe, B. Hill, D. Evans, A. McGregor-Smith, M. Cowan, C. Burness, M. Kennedy, and V. Edgar, also Messrs J. O’Gorman, J. Power, F. Du Vaile, and R. Morrall. A feature of the evening was a demonstration by the dressmaking and millinery groups of their work done at the evening clas&s. The members, under the leadership of Mrs G. de Thier, acted as mannequins.

W. Murdoch 3. Handicap— North-south: Mrs Davis and Mrs Pool I, Mrs O. Justice and Mrs M. Woodhouse 2, Mr and Mrs R. D. Iles 3. Eastwest: Mrs Buckland and Mrs Murdoch 1, Mrs G. B. Parkinson and Miss R. Kotlowski 2, Mrs U. Arthur and Mr E. C. Tapley 3. South Brighton was placed first, and the Christchurch centre and Mairehau second equal, in the district drama festival of the Canterbury Federation. of Country Women’s Institutes. The judge was Miss Beryl Bigg-Wither. South Brighton will compete against the winner of the North Canterbury contest at Rangiora later in the month. The two finalists in the South Island will meet the two North Island finalists in Wellington in July.

Remits for the Dominion conference of the Women’s Division of the Federated Farmers were discussed at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury provincial executive yesterday. Reports were given by Mrs R. A. Ambridge (housekeeping) apd Mrs A. Harper (Te Kiteroa rest home). Mrs M. E. Orchard presided.

Donald, chairman of the executive of the Aged People’s Welfare Council, was the guest speaker at a luncheon meeting of the Catholic Women’s League held at “Maryknoll” yesterday. Dr. Donald spoke on the care of the aged in Christchurch. Mrs R. Lattimore presided, and Miss K. O’Connor thanked the speaker. About 40 members and friends attended the monthly meeting of the Junior branch of the Navy League, which took the form of a “mystery party” held at Elizabeth House. The pianist was Miss Valerie Smythe. The hostesses were members of the committee.
