TRAMWAY WORKERS’ UNION
EXCEPTION TAKEN TO MANAGER’S REMARKS
The executive of the Christchurch Tramway Workers’ Union took strong exception recently to remarks made by Mr J. F. Fardell, general manager of the Christchurch Transport Board, objecting to the union’s right of putting suggestions before the Transport Licensing Authority. The public’s safety was the first duty of a tramway employee and drivers when protesting against the proposed change of the bus route at Sumner had exercised that duty, said a statement from the union yesterday. Mr J. Shankland, the president, had an instruction from the union to place its objection before the authority. The authority, consisting of one Transport Board member, one employee, one past chairman of the board and the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) was fully qualified to deal with transport matters, and the union did not think it was taking any unfair advantage by placing submissions before the authority.
