UNIVERSITY MATCH

RUGBY FOOTBALL

AUSTRALIANS WIN AT AUCKLAND

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 2. Playing bright and open football the Australian Universities Rugby team gained a well-deserved victory over a combined team from Auckland University College and Massey Agricultural College at Eden Park today by 20 points to 8. Australia scored six tries, only one of which was converted, to a converted try and a penalty goal. High and poor, tackling allowed the touring team to make deep gaps in the defence. The visiting players took full advantage of thdir opportunities. They threw the ball about and started movements from all sorts of positions. Features of their play were their speed and quick covering in support. The combined team’s efforts were lackadaisical.

The Australians led at half-time by 11 points to 8. Australia’s position then, in spite of the faults of the home forwards, was by no means secure. This was proved in the first 20 minutes of the second half, when the combined team, with the forwards playing better collectively, held command but just could not drive the advantage home. Australia had a narrow escape during this period, when the combined team just missed a try which quite easily coiflu have proved the turning point. M. Hughes, the Australian captain, in the last few minutes of the game refused to force the ball in the face of two or three opponents. He ran behind his own goal-line for about 15 yards, then straightened up and ran to about 10 yards past half-way before passing to K. Waller, who scored. Tries were scored for the visitors by O’Brien (2). Hughes (2), Meadows, and Waller. Phelps converted one. Martin scored all the combined team’s points.
