ADDINGTON MARKET

BIG FAT STOCK YARDING

Ewes And Wethers Sell Well

STORES ALSO IN DEMAND

There were heavy entries in all the fat stock sections at Addington stock , market yesterday. There were more . than 4500 fat sheep, more than 2500 fat lambs, and 500 head of fat cattle. Fat ewes and wethers were firm to a shade dearer over most of the sale, but at the end of a long sale continuing till after 5 p.m. .there was an easing in values. Best lamb continued to command high prices, but light and plainer sorts, which were forward in farily large numbers, looked to be slightly easier. In the fat cattle section steers were firm to a shade dearer, heifers from par to 10s a head better and cows were from par to £1 a head cheaper. There was another good sale for store cattle, with calves if anything showing some slight improvement in value. Adult cattle were not much different. All classes of store sheep met an excellent sale. Ewe lambs were 2s to 3s dearer, while wether lambs and aged ewes were generally firm. One-day sales were resumed yesterday. STORE SHEEP The entry of store sheep was 5914, against 3107 last week. The continued fine and warm weather brought a good crowd to the sale, and there was an excellent market for all classes. The yarding of lambs was 3888, against 1761 last week, and it was of exceptionally good a;jd even quality throughout. It was as good a winter yarding of lambs as has been seen at Addington for many years, and reflected the abundance of feed which is available in most districts. There was an excellent demand for ewe lambs which were 2s to 3s dearer than they were last week. Top price was 88s, which was secured for a pen of 80 halfbreds from J. Paton (Domett). The best of thp offering made 76s to 88s, good 62s to 725, and others 54s to 635. Representative sales were: on account of G. O. Stoddart (Tai Tapu), 67 Romneys at 84s, 65 at 70s; J. Mclntosh (Kaiapoi), 54 halfbreds at 765; R. McKay (Darfield), 70 halfbreds at 80s; J. N. Boag (Achray), 76 Corriedales at 725; W. J. Allan (Rotherham), 32 halfbreds at 61s; D. L. Prouse (Oxford). 70 halfbreds at 58s. The selection of wether lambs was particularly good. Some of the extra good lambs were perhaps a shade easier than they were last week, but for the rest prices were fully up to recent rates. Top price was 635, which was secured for 69 Corriedales from J. N. Boag (Achray), and 64 halfbreds from R. W. McKay (Darfield). The best of the yarding made 57s to 645, good 49s to 565, and others down to 355.

Representative sales were: on account of W. J, Allan, 66 halfbreds at 60s, 80 at 56s 6d, 75 Down Cross at 475, 74 m.s. Down cross at 645; H. Snushall (Waiau), 75 halfbreds at 535, 77 at 56s 6d; J. Stoddart. 79 Romneys at 625. The selection of ewes was very mixed, but there was a good sale for everything offering at full late rates. Top price for the sale was 86s for a pen of two-tooth Corriedales sold on behalf of a client. The three other pens of two-tooths made 74s to 80s. *

These wethers came forward in excellent order, and met ,a sound sale. The draft totalled 758 and the two-tooths made 63s to 675, the fourtooths to 65s 6d, and four and six-tooths to 62s 6(1. The best of the rest of the offering made 67s to 725, medium 58s to 665, good aged wethers 58s to 62s 6d, and others 46s to 565.

FAT LAMBS There was another good free sale for fat lambs. The yarding was 2652, compared with 1921 last week. Quality was not so good as at last sale, when there was one of the best selections of lambs for a long time. There were many lines of light and plainer lambs—typical end of the season lambs—and few of the extra good heavy lambs which made exceptionally high, values at the last sale. For all classes, however, the sale continued on a very free tone. In the main there was not much variation from late rates. The best of the offering were in keen demand, at values which were fully firm. Light and plain lambs were perhaps a shade easier. At the start of the sale it looked as though there might be a light entry, but numbers swelled considerably as the sale progressed. The best of the' offering made to 92s Id, good ’"ls Id to 84s, medium 63s 6d to 70s, and others down to 50s. The toppriced lambs were shorn. They were from C. C. and K. M. DAIRY CATTLE 1 The entry in the dairy cattle section ■ totalled about 40 head, and was smaller 1 than last week. Quality was mixed. For ► cows values were from par to a shade ■ better, but there was not quite so much : demand for heifers. Prices for heifers > looked lower, but this was partly due to ■ the poorer quality of the offering. Quite • a number of spring calvers met a ready 5 sale at £lB to £22. •_ Best second, third, and fourth calvers

sold at £39 to £44, medium £3l to £3B, and aged and inferior and spring calvers sold down to £lB. For best heifers prices ranged from £39 to £46, with two sales to £53 and £55, medium £3l to £3B, and others down to £lB 10s. VEALERS There was quite a large yarding in the veal section, but it did not include very many small calves, for which there was consequently a good demand. For other than this class values remained about on a par with late rates. FAT RIGS ’ There Was a much larger entry in the porker section, including four trucks from outside districts. In the entry was a fairly large percentage of small and unfinished pork. For the better quality pigs values practically maintained last week’s rates, but for the lighter sorts the market was a dragging one with values 4s to 5s easier. Choppers came forward in much larger numbers, but nevertheless the sale was a good one. In the bacon section the entry was much smaller, and the sale was an • excellent one throughout. 1 Values were:— Light porkers, £4 14s 6d to £5 17s 6d. ' Medium porkers, £6 10s 6d to £7 9s 6d. ! Heavy porkers, £7 19s 6d to £8 12s 6d. ’ Choppers, £lO 11s to £l6 18s 6d. i Light baconers, £9 9s 6d to £lO 14s 6d. Medium baconers, £lO 17s 6d to £ll 17s I 6d. Heavy baconers, £l2 9s 6d to £l4 Is 6d.

STORE PIGS There was again a small entry in the } store pig section, which consisted mainly lof small and medium stores. Very few c weaners were yarded. The market for ' weaners improved considerably, and { medium and large stores practically mains tained last week’s better rates. s Values were:— s Weaners, 42s to 555. s Slips, 56s to 60s. s Small and medium stores, 63s to 80s. e Large stores, 85s to 955. o • TINWALD One of the largest yardings of fat sheep 2 (4000) for many years was entered at _ Tinwald stock sale yesterday.
