JOCKEY’S FEAT AT ASHBURTON

D. F. Coombe Rides Three Winners LORD ROWALLAN WINS MAIN RACE The Biccartoa jockey, D. F. Coombe. rode three winners from five mounts on the first day of the Ashburton County Racing Club's meeting on Saturday. Coombe was on Lord Rowallan and Teko. winners of the double, the Tinwald and Eiffel ton Handicaps;, also Solstice, which brilliantly won the Chatmos Hack Handicap under difficulties. Solstice was badly galloped on in bis race and bridged what appeared to be an impossible gap to win, but Lord Hawaiian and Teko won in more orthodox style and returned doubles backers odds of £B6 18s for £l. There were 287 tickets on the successful combination. Lord Rowallan*s . win for Mrs A. Cuthbert was well deserved. He was fourth on a soft track at Riccarton a week earlier, and being able to complete his preparation for Saturday on looting with the sting out of it no doubt helped him to win on a hard track A keen finish with Ngapunawai and Dandy looked likely until 50 yards from the post, but Lord Rowallan was going away at the finish to establish a margin of a length. Ngapunawai beat Dandy by a nose for second. Lord Rowallan is trained at Riccarton by M. J. Wadley. This was his third win for the season. Teko decisively won the second leg in the colours of the Riccarton trainer, J- A. Cox. He finished strongly from a close trailing position and rather comfortably met tile challenge of the favourite. Royal Oak. This was Teko’s fifth start since he won his first race at Hororata last December. He gave Cox his second success as an owner-trainer for the day, Cullen winning the Lagmhor Stakes. There was good racing on the club's remodelled track, which can now bear ' crsnpx Iron with any in the South Triend Always roomy, the track has been widened at the winning post on a new straight from 42ft to 80ft.
