SMART TRIAL BY DECLARE

RACING

FIT HORSE FOR C.J.C. MEETING

Declare, which is to be tested foi more stamina in the Dominion Handi-

cap on the first day of the Canterbury j Jockey Club’s 6 autumn meeting, ran a mile in the smart time of Imin ] 44 4-ssec, the last half in 51 4-ssec, ; at Riccarton on Saturday. There was i merit in this trial, because he galloped wide out on the course proper. Declare was ridden by W. Hanlin, , and was joined after running two furlongs by the Great Easter candidate, i Lord Rowallan (C. C. Stokes). Lord Rowallan ran his six furlongs in Imin 18 3-ssec, and finished ■ his trial in good style. Zingabo (C. A. Whyte) took the honours of his mile trial with his stablemates Tyro (A. H. Eastwood) and Poilu (N. F. Davison). He gave the other two a start of four lengths, but reduced that to three-quarters of a length at the finish, and completed the distance in Imin 45 2-ssec. The pace slackened slightly towards the finish, the last half-mile taking 53 l-ssec. Zingabo, a winner at Oamaru last month, is in the Dominion Handicap next Monday, and he appears to have a good light-weight’s chance. Tamrin (W. Hanlin) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 29 l-ssec, but without exerting himself very much. He was restrained after running the first furlong in 12sec, but he increased speed again from the half-mile, coming home in 50 2-ssec. Tamrin has thrived since he won the open sprint on the first day of the autumn meeting at Trentham. He is one of the early favourites for the Great Easter. The only others to use the course proper were Hush Money (W. Hanlin) and Mistinguet (T. J. Smith). They sprinted home from the half-mile in 53 l-ssec, Hush Money doing her work very well. The other trials were either on the plough or the No. 6 grass, feW being of any great interest. But Captain Hawk could have improved qn his time of Imin 2 4-ssec for five furlongs on the No. 6 ; grass when he shaded Ray Ribbon and Teko. W. J. Broughton will be unable to ride 1 Captain Hawk in the Champagne Stakes, as was thought earlier. K. Nuttall may ’ now get the mount on Sir John McKen- • zie’s smart two-year-old, a recent winner , at Awapuni. Exchequer (E. G. Rosewarne) jumped very fast and galloped keenly in his run - over -four hurdles. He hit the first and ’ second flights, but without slackening ; speed, and his jumping could not be k faulted over the last two flights. Profane (A. J. Williams) also jumped ■ four hurdles. He got in close- at one ; flight, and appeared to be feeling the • firm ground.
