GOOD WIN FOR KUHLA AT ADDINGTON

Field Beaten Decisively In Williams Handicap

RETA PETER HANDICAP TO SLIPSTREAM

The consistent Kuhla gained his most important win when he beat a strong field in the Williams Handicap on the second day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting at Addington on Saturday. Other fine races were run by Slipstream, Tactician, and Gay Lad.

Kuhla, the best-performed, horse by the Jack Potts horse Pacing Power, which is now at the stud in Australia, had a good run throughout Saturday’s race. It was not until the final furlong that his driver, M. Holmes, gave him his head, and he won by two and a half lengths from First Victory.

Owned and trained by L. Beattie, Kuhla has had 23 starts this season for three wins and 14 placings. His stake-earnings this term amount to £3130, of which £1250 has come from placings. Before Saturday’s race many thought that Kuhla would find the class in the Williams Handicap too good for him. He should have little difficulty in extending his record before the end of the season.

Slipstream made an exhibition of the field in the Reta Peter Handicap. He joined Bonus racing to the straight and won with something in hand. Raced by Sir John McKenzie and trained by G. B. Noble, Slipstream is unfortunately unable to race in the New Zealand Hambletonian Handicap next week, but next season he will be a welcome addition to the best company among the trotters.

Slipstream, which has been lightly raced because of a muscular complaint, is a 10-year-old gelding by Spencer Volo or U. Scott from the imported mare, Air Flow, the dam also of Aerial Scott, Red Emperor, Flight Commander, and Scottish Air. •

Tactician made a high-class field of sprinters in the Electric Stakes look second rate. After his good placing in the Rattray Handicap the previous Saturday, Tactician was at his peak for the Electric Stakes. He broke at the start, and his position looked hopeless with six furlongs to run, where he was at the back of a bunch. M. C. McTigue sent him rftmd the field racing to the half-mile post. He was in front with about three furlongs to run, and from then none of the others looked likely to catch him. His 2min 36 4-ssec for the mile and a quarter was a fine effort in conditions not conducive to speed. Gay Lad beat the favourites when he led throughout in the New Zealand Pacing Stakes. The half-brother to Happy Man appears likely to win his way to good class if his trainer, W. K. Tatterson, can keep him sound. Highland Flame made a one-horse race of the New Zealand Trotting Stakes. She was the only horse to trot solidly throughout, and she won confidently by 100 yards. A good type of filly by U. Scott from Flame, she is owned and trained as Ashburton by J. Wilson. She is a half-sister to Flammula, runner-up to Battle Cry in last year’s race. Her dam. Flame, was runner-up to her stablemate, Acclamation. in the race in 1946. There were 357 successful 5s tickets on the Kuhla-Scott Wrack doubles combination, which returned £.321 5s 6d for £l. Scott Wrack was the 11, 9 favourite in a field of 12. The meeting was held in fine weather before a good attendance. The track was in good order, but times were affected by a strong north-easterly wind. Totalisator investments for the day

amounted to £ 112.837 ss, including £10,836 15s on the double, compared with £68,015 last year, when the meetJ Kuhla*. Win . * Kuhla gave M Holmes his third successive winning drive for the day when he outsprinted the opposition over the final furlong in the Williams Handicap. Kuhla had a perfect run Throughout behind the pacemakers. Our Roger was in front earl*, but was passed for a time He went to the front again, but with •even furlongs to run ms stablemate, Brava, was in charge. Brava was shading Paia Royal at the straight entrance, with First Victory, Roschana, B»ve Company, Our Roger, Kuhla, CounteAnark, Onward and Brueus all handy. Kuhla was pulled out at the furlong, at which stage First Victory looked to have the race won, and he took over soon afterwards. He finished boldly to win by more than two The New Brighton Cup winner, First Victory, raced soundly for second, half a head in front of Brave Company, which also went well. Denbry raced excellently from the back mark of 48 yards to finish fourth, a length behind Brave Company. Ros chana was fifth, shading Brava and Merval. with Paia Royal, Brueus, ar.dPoranui following. Excelsa, Countermark, Brueus, Merval, Kvblai Khan, First Mate,, and Aladdin made mistakes at the start. SUpstream Wins Again Slipstream, making his first appearance •gainst the best horses of his gait, gained a decisive win in the Reta Peter Handicap. Bonus was the pacemaker, with Slipstream about a length back on the outside of Indomitable. Slipstream, moved up to Bonus racing to the straight, where they were followed by Indomitable, Fair Isle. Captain Cuddles, Swanee River, and Di' ta tian. SlipSUaam soon took the measure of the field, and he won with something in hand by four lengths. Bonus, which had broken in the straight in his race last week, ran on well over the last furlong to hold on for second; a nose in front of Indomitable, which had, every chapce. Fair Isle trotted a sound race for fourth, ©ver two lengths behind Indomitable. She just shaded Dictation, the backmarkir. which trotted brilliantly. He was checked by the galloping Sure Charge soon aft4r the start, and he was hampered by the same horse when* he broke again at the end of a furlong and a half. His effort to finish so close up wa> a feature of the race. He was clear of Swanee River •nd Signal Light. Sure Charge broke at the start and in the running, and Correction broke at the end of two furlongs. Tactician Brilliant Tactician was brilliant in winning th« Electric Stakes, after breaking at the start and narrowly escaping trouble from a galloping horse. When he settled down Tac- . tician had only Van Dieman and Star i Rosa behind him, and he was a long way from the leaders. Thelma Globe began; best, but Johnny Globe forged to the front I at the end of two furlongs. With half a mile covered Johnny Globe was closely attended by Thelma Globe, Denbry, Adorian, Soangetaha, Petite Yvonne, Au Revoir and Tactics, with Zulu. Van Dieman and Tactician next. Tactician made a brilliant run racing to the halfmile post, and half a furlong further on he joined Johnny Globe in the lead. He was clear at the three furlongs, and turning into the straight he was two lengths in front of Johnny Globe, with a length to Thelma Globe and Denbry. They were followed two lengths back by Adorian, Soangetaha, Petite Yvonne, and Van DieTactician always had the measure of his opponents, and he finished boldly to •win by two lengths from Thelma Globe, which had every chance. Soangetaha finished on for third, two lengths in front ©f Petite Yvonne, with Au Revoir, Zulu, Denbry, Tactics, Adorian, and Van Dieman crossing the line in a bunch. Tactics. Zulu, Star Rosa and Tactician made mistakes at the start, and Van Dieman broke at the end of a furlong. Mayen ga in Form Mayenga saved backers of Consul, w’hich was pulled up after a serious check, when he won the Plains Handicap most convincingly. Authie went to the front with one mile and a half to run. and Mayenga was one sulky out just behind him. After passing the half-mile post Authie and Mayenga put a break of three lengths on the field, and they turned into the straight two lengths in front of Roy Grattan, with Chandelier funder pressure), Chief Lochiel. Prince Charming, and Clontarf next. Mayenga soon took the measure of Authie and he won comfortably by four lengths. Roy Grattan, which raced in the middle ©f the field for most of the race, finished on for second without ever appearing likely to catch the winner. Authie ran his best race for some time when he held on for third, half a length behind Roy Grattan, with two lengths to the hot favourite. Chandelier. Clontarf, Dlamed. Prince Charming, and Sea Rover followed. . Defendant and Flagship broke at the siart. and Consul was a little slow. At the end of half a mile Parrish Mills broke aad citoeked Consul, Vivanti, and DefendParrish Mills, and Vivanti '* r « subsequently pulled up.
