WATERSIDE WORKERS
Sir,—lt is unfortunate, but true, that more nonsense is written, through the ignorance perhaps, about watersiders than of any other body of workers. The press generally is largely to blame for not giving the public accurate information. Normal working hours are 59 a week: 8 a.m. to, 9 p.m. week-days and 8 a.m. to 12 noon Saturdays. Men employed- on the inter island steamer express work 73 hours weekly, including Sunday. In addition, frequent demands are made to work “meal hours,” “extended hours” to 10 p.m., and Saturday afternoons to 5 p.m. Add two hours daily spent in unpaid travelling time by many men living in Christchurch and a better idea can be obtained of this modern slavery in a country which 'boasts of its 40-hour week. A great deal more could be said to open the eyes of ignorant people who have the impertinent temerity' to criticise without true knowledge of hard facts.—Yours, etc., JUSTICE. March 25, 1954.
