CHANCE FOR NEW NOVELISTS
Literary Contest Announced
(From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, March 2. Young New Zealand writers who have not had a novel published will be eligible to enter a literary competition sponsored by the Falcon Press, of London, this year. The chairman, Mr Peter Baker, M.C., M.P., is offering a prize of £250 for the best first novel by a Commonwealth writer. , , . x Mr Baker, who is also chairman of the Company of Commonwealth Venturers, a corporation organised to develop the resources of the Commonwealth, has sponsored the competition to encourage young writers throughout the Commonwealth. The judging will be done by a panel of British authors and literary. critics who will assess the entries on literary merit, story content, universality of appeal and general suitability in length and form. All entrants in the competition must be residents in, and nationals of, Britain, the Dominions or Colonies, mandates or territories of the Commonwealth. The entries must be first novels hitherto unpublished in any form or language and must 1 be typewritten in English. All entries have to be accompanied by a witnessed statement that the author has fulfilled the conditions of the competition. The closing date for overseas entries is October 23 next. The winning entry may be published by the sponsoring publishers in which case the successful author will receive a normal author’s contract in addition to his prize.
