THE OLD AND THE NEW.—Towering chimneys are all that remain of the homestead on the old Rhodes estate at Elmwood, where the second salvage sale (including big kauri joists) was held yesterday. In this picture, the assembly hall under construction at the new Heaton Street Intermediate School is shown impinging right up to the remains of the old two-storey building. Other new classrooms abut foundations to the left, and the linking block will be started immediately the chimneys are demolished next week.
