TOBACCO WORKERS’ WAGES

INCREASE IN NELSON DISTRICT (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 25. The Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan) announced today that an Order-in-Council had been gazetted prescribing increased rates of wages for workers employed in the tobacco industry in the Nelson district. It was a sequel to the increase provided by the general wage order of the Court of Arbitration issued on November 19. The new rates are as follows: Field Section. —Adult male workers: 4s 9d an hour. Youths: under 16 2s, 16 and 17 3s, 18 4§, 19 4s 3d, 20 and over 4s 9d. Women: under 16 2s, 16 and 17 2s Bd, 18 and 19 3s, 20 and over 3s 4d. Shed Section.—Adult male workers: 4s 9d an hour. Youths: under 16 2S, 16 and 17 3s, 18 4s, 19 4 S 3d, 20 and over 4s 9d. Women: under 16 2s, 16 2s 4d, 17 2s Bd, 18 and 19 3s, 20 and over 3s 4d. The new rates are to operate as from September 1, 1953.
