“PRIVATE LIVES”
Sir,—ln fairness to your reporter and to the two leading players in “Private Lives,” it seems necessary to point out that when your reviewer said “neither of the leading players had a voice
which could command attention,” he was referring to their singing voices and as Lover” seems to think, to their dialogue. All the cast got the utmost out of the bright, witty lines with an admirable audibility, the characterisation was excellent, timing and movements (so often a Weak spot even in more experienced players) very good. What does it matter if they cannot sing? Neither can Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence. It is altogether great fun, with smooth, finished production and excellent acting, and the obvious enjoyment of the players themselves making the whole thing go with a bang. We can all do with a little fun.—Yours, etc., ♦ USUALLY CRITICAL. March 24, 1954.
