ROYAL N.Z. CORPS OF SIGNALS

EQUIPMENT WITH MODERN TRANSMITTERS (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, March 24. Territorial trainees posted to the Royal New Zealand Corps of Signals will soon have five of the most modern and powerful mobile radio transmitters available on which to train. Two of the transmitters, known as “53 sets,” have arrived in the country, and the other three are due soon. Designed for installation in large motor trucks, three of the sets will be fitted at the Trentham Military Camp workshops and then sent to squadrons at Auckland. Palmerston North, and Wellington. The remaining two will go to Waiouru, where the School of Signals will use one for training mechanics. The Army already possesses radio receivers suitable for use with the new transmitters. It is hoped to import conversion kits from England which will enable teleprinter machines to be plugged in. The British Army used “53 sets” during the Normandy landing, and, with modifications, they have continued to be standard equipment for British troops. The New Zealand Army in the past has used smaller and less powerful sets, but with the purchase of these five transmitters communications will be faster and more reliable.
