LYTTELTON NEWS
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING The Building Controller has refused tc grant priority to the building of the Lyttelton Hotel in Norwich quay, according to a letter from the Minister of Works (the Hon. W. S. Goosman), forwarded by Mr H. R. Lake, M.P., to the Lyttelton Borough Council. The letter, read at a meeting of the council on Monday, said:—“lt is appreciated that both the council and the Licensing Control Commission are anxious to have these hotel premises rebuilt, and the Building Control Advisory Committee has again examined the scheme, which involves the erection of new premises of 4409 square feet at an estimated cost of £20,000. .. . Apart from the temporary premises now operating at the Lyttelton Hotel, which .the council concedes are satisfactory so. far as temporary accommodation goes, there are seven other licensed premises in Lyttelton, the majority being sited very near to one another, with the result that the question of inconvenience to the pub - lic is hardly applicable.”
The letter was received, the council deciding to take no action? The Diamond Harbour Burgesses’ Association complained of the failure of the lights at the wharf recently, and it also asked when the extra street lights at Diamond Harbour, promised by the council 12 months ago, would be installed.
The letter was referred to the electricity committee. A letter complaining of the launch service from Diamond Harbour on Sunday afternoons was also received from the association. The. letter said that on a number of occasions a sifiall launch, instead of a one, was sent to take the 4.45 p.m. passengers, with the result that many passengers had been left on the wharf to travel by the 6 p.m. launch. These passengers missed bus connexions in Christchurch. The council decided to refer the complaint to the contractors for the launch service. Approval of the council’s proposal to sow grass in the recreation area near the graving dock was given in a letter from the Lyttelton Harbour Board. An offer to assist the council in any way to obtain an improvement in the Lyttelton-Christchurch railway service was received from the Canterbury Progress League. Appreciation of the league’s offer was expressed bjb the Mayor (Mr F. G. Briggs) and the couhciL agreed to supply the league with the informa-' tion necessary. A report from Messrs Royds and Sutherland, consulting engineers to the council, said that there were indications that the large slip below Brittan terrace had made the section unsafe. The ground was unstable and a protracted period of wet weather could cause further movement of the house towards the slip and possible collapse. The council decided to serve notice on the owner of the property requiring him to make the place safe to the satisfaction of the council. A request from a deputation from the Lyttelton Scouts’ Committee for the use of a small section adjoining the Cenotaph site on which to erect a scout building was referred to the by-laws and building committee. The deputation, which consisted of Messrs F. H. Heal and Perry and the Rev. N. J. Kelly, said that the design of the proposed building would be in conformity with the surroundings. Advice was received that an application for a slot telephone cabinet for Corsair Bay had been approved by the Post and Telegraph Department. Kindergarten Fair A successful children’s fair in aid of the funds of the Lyttelton kindergarten was* held at St. Saviour’s Hall on Saturday afternoon. Prizes were, awarded as follows—fancy dress, boys,’ Robert Newton 1, Stephen Walker 2; girls, Elizabeth Blenkinsop 1, Kay Donnelly 2. Special: Waine Amos. Nail driving competition, N. D.
