NO WARRANTS OF FITNESS

REQUEST FOR INCREASED PENALTIES A request for increased penalties against traffic offenders for driving without warrants of fitness was made by Traffic Officer R. Stringer, of the Transport Department, in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday when a charge of this type was being, heard before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. Traffic Officer Stringer said he wished to draw the attention of the* Court to the prevalence of the offence, especially in view of the alarming accident rate. A warrant of fitness was to ensure that a motor-car was up to a certain standard, he said. ’ “But some drivers go for years without warrants for their cars without being detected. The maximum penalty for the offence is £5O, and I ask this Court to increase the penalties imposed.’’ The Magistrate said some of the cases related to offenders who had forgotten to renew their warrants for a few days or a week after the due date. He thought those should be dealt with in a different way from those in which cars had not even been tested.
