PANIC AMONG CROWD
Crush Outside Parliament
(Rec. 11 p.m.) ADELAIDE, March 23. Police broadcast urgent radio calls for first aid volunteers today when a dense crowd gathered along a short stretch of roadway between Government House and Parliament House, which the Queen visited. The crowd packed 50 feet deep in 9 solid phalanx on both sides of the roadway in the 100-yard stretch along which the. Queen drove. Dozens of women and children fainted, many being pushed against the barriers by the weight of the crowd and held upright unable to move. The crowd was orderly, but panic began when newcomers added to the crowd of 20,000. Extra police arrived and moved the barriers on to the roadway, relieving the pressure. Today was one of the heaviest days of the Royal couple’s South Australian visit. They attended a rally of 23,000 former servicemen in the morning, and this afternoon the Queen opened Parliament. Later the Royal couple watched spectacular formations of 60.000 children expressing their loyalty. Tonight the Queen and the Duke will attend a Parliamentary dinner at. Government House.
