MAN ADJUDGED BANKRUPT
Refusal To Pay £484 In Taxes
ABILITY TO DISCHARGE DEBT ADMITTED
(New Zealand Press Association) , DUNEDIN, March 19. Although he admitted he had sufficient funds to pay a debt of £484 19s 8d owing to the. Inland Revenue Department, a Dunedin man who appeared in the Supreme Court today refused to give an undertaking that he wotilq. do so, and Mr Justice Archer accordingly issued an order adjudging him bankrupt The man was Alexander Clifford Mclntyre, a motor mechanic, who appeared on a summons to show cause why an order of adjudication should not be made.
Mr W. F. Thomson, who represented the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, as petitioning creditor, said Mclntyre had some real or imagined grievance about the treatment he received after his return from World War I, and steadfastly refused to pay any taxes to the Government. The department’s files showed that Mclntyre had been given every consideration and opportunity to pay the amounts outstanding, said Mr Thomson. He was said to be an able and willing worker. In reply to his Honour. Mclntyre said he had sufficient money to pay the department, but he would stand by his resolution not to do so. “If I did pay them, I would not have any money left,” said Mclntyre. “Then you would not be much worse off than the rest of us,” his Honour replied. His Honour asked Mclntyre whether he appreciated the implicatioiis of being adjudged a bankrupt. “You can do whatever you like,” said Mclntyre.
