OAMARU CLUB’S MEETING
LOCHLISTEN AMBROSE FOR DOUBLE
Off-course betters are presented with a problem at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting today by the double acceptance of the capable Riccarton mare Pleasure Bent.
Pieasdre Bent will probably be wellsupported off the course for the main race and first leg of the double, the Oamaru Cup: but she is also engaged in the Stewards’ Handicap, seven furlongs, later in the day. A final decision has not yet been made about which race she is to contest. For off-course doubles investors, Lochlisten appears a safe choice for the first leg. Lochlisten has raced well in better fields than the one she will meet in the Oamaru Cup, and the Balloch mare will be hard to beat. Maritea is returning to her best, as she showed at her latest start, at Wingatui last month, when she was a fast-finishing third over 11 furlongs. The distance oi today’s race is 10 furlongs, and if she has a good run, she should take part in the finish. Milton, which will have prospects if started in this race, is an unlikely runner. Marjo, a likely improver, should race well today, and Royal Birthday also has prospects. If Pleasure Bent is reserved for the Stewards’ Handicap, she will be hard to beat with 7-10 in this small field. Debenture and the top-weight, Persian Gulf, should be the hardest for her to beat, and Misty Range will have a light-weight’s chance. The Second Leg Ambrose has raced consistently aul without a great deal of luck this season, and he is selected to win the second leg. the Windsor Hack Handicap, of 10 furlongs. Ambrose’s placings include a good third to Surprise Ending and Strathcarror at Riccarton last month, and at his latest appearance, at Motukarara on March 6 he made up »a lot of ground to finish a good fifth in the hack mile event.
Strathcarron, which returned to forn. with an impressive win over eight furlongs and a half at the Cromwell meeting a fortnight ago, may extend Ambrose. The Royal Arch colt will be better suited by the Oamaru course than some of his opponents. •» Ngahuia, which has been placed at her two latest starts, is also expected to race prominently. Abbot's Choice and Ra should also show up. Rain which fell at the end of last week freshened the track. The weather was fine in Oamaru yesterday, and the track should be in excellent racing order toSelections:— 11.45 a.m.—Trial Stakes: Princess Neptune, Rich Wind, Carol York. 12.25 p.m.—Weston Trot: Midday, Princess Dawn, Final Glow. 1.10 pan.—Oamaru Cup: Lochlisten, Maritea, Pleasure Bent, if scr Mar jo. 1.55 p.m.—Autumn High-weight: Cock Crow,-Dandy, Algaro. 2.40 p.m.—Stewards’ Handicap: Debenture, Persian Gulf, Pleasure Bent. 3.25 p.m.—Windsor Hack Handicap: Ambrose, Strathcarron, Ngahuia. 4.10 p.m.—Redcastle Trot: Master Tony, Band Queen, Veneer. 4.55 p.m.—Parkside Hack Handicap: Super Loch, Royal Charm, Yosudi.
