ATOM WEAPONS FOR FRANCE

Manufacture To Be Considered (Rec. 11 p.m.) PARIS, March 18. France must think about making atomic weapons soon, the Defence Minister, Mr Rene Pleven,, declared yesterday. Speaking in a National Assembly debate on the 1954 military budget, Mr Pleven said that before next year’s Budget was prepared the Government would have to examine thoroughly the whole proble.m raised by the manufacture of nuclear weapons by a country of France’s importance. For the last three years officers of the armed forces had been working with France’s Atomic Energy Commission, Mr Pleven disclosed. “The commission’s studies have enabled us to obtain interesting results in the field of protection against nuclear weapons. “We must also study the application of atomic energy to the propulsion of certain ships.”
