DEATH OF PIONEER (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, February 1. The man who started the crossword puzzle craze in Britain nearly 30 years ago died at his home in Croydon this week. He was Mr Morley Adams. A journalist, Mr Adams started an agency # with a staff of compilers, shortly after the first crossword puzzle was published in Britain in 1924. At first, newspaper editors regarded the puzzle as an American stunt that would soon die, but the craze swept through Britain, and Mr Adams’s agency expanded to meet the enormous demand.

When he celebrated the production of his 50,000 crossword to British and foreign newspapers a few years ago, he was supplying sets to newspapers all over the English-speaking world. As a crossword puzzle expert, Mr Adams rarely wasted his time trying tc solve puzzles. According to a member of his firm.
