NAGUIB NOT TO VISIT LONDON
PROPOSAL REJECTED BY CHURCHILL
LONDON, February 11.
The Prime Minister (Sir Winston Churchill) today rejected a Suggestion in the House of Commons that he should invite General Naguib to London.
Mr Woodrow Wyatt (Labour) had suggested this so that they could discuss outstanding obstacles to the British-Egyptian agreement on the future of the Suez Canal base. Mr Wyatt said that General Naguib himself had expressed a wish to come to London to talk to the Prime Minister.
Sir Winston Churchill replied: “Each case has to be judged on its merits, and I do not consider this particular procedure would be helpful.” When Labour members asked why. the Prime Minister said: “I cannot tell you. I would have to tell the whole story from beginning to end. but if I thought it would be helpful there is no reason constitutionally or in proprietory why it should not be adopted.”
