OLD PEOPLE OPEN FUND
APPEAL TO MAYOR FOR PUBLIC COLLECTION (New Zealand Press Association) GREYMOUTH, December 27.
Inmates of the old people’s home at Hokitika, when they heard of the railway disaster, held a collection among themselves led by £1 given by a 78-year-old man. They sent for the chairman of the Westland Hospital Board <Mr E. W. Heenan), who is also Mayor of Hokitika, and asked that Hokitika open a public relief fund. Mr Heenan said this could not be done until advice was received from the Prime Minister (Mr Holland). He thanked the old people for their generosity and promised that if a fund was opened their gifts would head the list.
Mr Heenan telegraphed Hokitika’s sympathy, to the Prime Minister adding a tribute to the work of the rescuers.
