TRACK WORK AT RICCARTON

LORD ROWALLAN FIT FOR WINGATUI HERMES AND MILLRACE SPRINT WELL Tamrin and Hush Money (over a short course), and Lord Rowallan over six furlongs were the most impressive of the gallopers on the outside of the course proper at Riccarton yesterday, when that track was available by special arrangement. On the No. 7 grass, which was in general use, Dixie Leigh, Ray Ribbon, Our Treasure, White Clover, Hermes, and Millrace returned the best times for their respective trials. There was also much merit in the sprint of Bahrein and Merry Medley. Altogether, there was a good deal of work completed by horses racing at the various holiday meetings, and conditions were pleasant. Both tracks provided fast going. The plough track is out of commission for fast work.

First to work on the course proper were Hush Money (N. Symons) and Tamrin (A. J. Stokes), which ran half a mile in 50 2-ssec. Tamrin had a slight advantage at the finish, but Hush Money’s saddle appeared to have slipped. Copenhagen (Symons) and Declare (Stokes) galloped over the same course in 51 2-ssec. Hush 'Money and Tamrin will race at Dunedin next week. Declare and Copenhagen are being prepared for the Wellington Cup meeting. Desperado (E. G. Low) and Pleasure Bent (G. W. Mein) were just clear of Lord Rowallan (A. J. Stokes) after they had covered two furlongs in 125 2-5 sec, but Lord Rowallan drew up to Pleasure Bent in the straight, and finished on terms with her in Imin 17 2-ssec for the six furlongs. Desperado was two lengths back at the end. Lord Rowallan recorded 51 4-ssec for his last half-mile, and appeared to have a good deal in reserve at the post. He is in the Stewards’ Handicap at Wingatui, and is ready to show his best form again. The only others to run on the course proper were Sovereign Salute (G. W. Mein) and Americus (D. J. Thistoll), which galloped seven furlongs, but were not timed. Mile Trials Surprise Ending (Miss F. Kerr) started from the mile and covered the last six furlongs» in Imin 19sec, the final three furlongs in 40sec. Kettledrum (A. J. Stokes) and Cristatus (L. Woodhouse) were given a similar task. Cristatus beat his mate by half a length in Imin 19sec and took 39sec from the three furlongs. Another pair which followed this programme were Gold Scheme (L. J. Ellis) and Balveine (E. G. Low). Gold Scheme finished a head in front at the post in Imin 20 3-ssec. They ran home in 40 1Although there was little between them at the finish of their seven furlongs in Imin 33sec, Kind Wish (A. H. Eastwood) was galloping better than Mish Mish (PHill) just short of the post, after running the first half-mile in 52sec. Tom Bowling (R. McSeveny) and Lovelock (N. Symons) took Imin 34sec, but finished solidly from the three in 38sec. # There were several attractive gallops over six furlongs. Hermes (B. Lake) and Millrace (W. Hanlin) took the honours in Imin 14 4-ssec. The second half of the trial took 4-ssec longer than the first. The pair finished together, and their figures were just Isec faster than the next best over the distance. Both are hacks, but Millrace will contest the Publicans' Handicap at Wingatui. Dan (F. H. Skelton) worked with plenty of dash when he gave Referee (P. Hill) a start of two lengths and beat him by nearly a length in Imin 15 4-ssec. He took 51sec for the final half-mile. Dan has been nominated for the sprint at Oamaru. where he won at his last visit. Strong Finish The excellent finishing run af Bahrein (D. J. Thistoll) and Merry Medley (R McSeveny) made their effort very impressive. Although their time for the distance was Imin 16 l-ssec, no other horse returned as good time for the final three furlongs—36 4-ssec. Sawdust (F. H. Skelton) started with them, but was beaten off in the straight and was six lengths away at the finish. Instinctive (P. Rosewarne) ran his opening three furlongs in 37 2-ssec and the full distance in Imin 16 4-ssec. Accountant (G. Lee) beat Colonel Hunt (C. Markwick) by half a length in Imin 17 2-ssec. The last four furlongs took 52 2Strato (A. J. Stokes) could have returned better time when he was narrowly beaten by Carnaval (T. J. Smith) and Decapitate (P Hill) in Imin 18 2-ssec. He galloped easily, on the outside, over the final three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Corolight (R. McSeveny) beat Dayton (G. Hillis) by half a length in imin 19sec, time equalled by Entrancing (D. J. Thistoll) and by Detroit (McSeveny), which finished well and beat Danger Pomt (Hillis) by half a length. Danger Point will run in the Dunedin Cup and not the I Stewards’ Handicap. Teresa Gamba (T. IJ. Smith) and Devalue (L. Woodhouse) took Imin 21 2-ssec. Our Treasure (L. J. Ellis) had more early speed than White Clover (R. McSeveny), but there was nothing between them at the end of five furlongs in Imin 3sec, the last three in 37 2-ssec. Okaruru (P. Rosewarne) ran the distance in Imin ’3 4-ssec, and Goneaway (Rosewarne) took Imin 4 l-ssec. Harpy (A. G. Walsh) beat Sharvah (B. Moore) by half a length in Imm 4 2-ssec. Direct Passage (B. Gordon) took Imin 5 l-ssec, and Indulgence (G. Lee) led Passchenedaele (P. Hill) throughout in Imin 6sec. Dixie Leigh (B. Hillis) had half a length to spare from Golden Shoes (F. H. Skelton) when they completed half a mile in Dixie Leigh is an unraced two-year-old filly by Boissier from Lorna Leign. She will have her first start at Washdyke on December 28. She is owned by Mr and Mrs H. T. Prebble, Waipara. and is trained bv J. A. Cox. Teko (P. Alexander) carried his lightweight rider easily over the distance in 51 4-ssec. Gold Scheme’s half-brother, Gold Trend (L. J. Ellis), beat Port Boy (W. Hanlin) by half a length in 52sec. These two are in the Juvenile Handicap at Washdyke Gold Trend is a two-year-old of considerable promise, and may not be the least successful of a generally well perfoimed family.

Ray Ribon Improving Ray Ribbon (B. Moore) and Star of Evening (J. W. McDonald) recorded 35 4-ssec for three furlongs. They finished together, but Ray Ribbon looked as if he could have gone away. The Dunedin Champagne Stakes candidate is improving all the time. It was a very encouraging sprint by the maiden. Star of Evening. Merriment (E. G. Low) sprinted her three furlongg in 36 l-ssec. A. Cutts’s horses, Overboard. Trustworthy, Assembly, and Relinquisn, were restricted to easy work. Using the hurdles for the first time since their re-erection. Profane (A. J. Williams) and Exchequer (E. G. Rosewarne) gave a fast and clean exhibition over four flights. They are acceptcis for the Warrington Hurdles at Wingatui. Some Riccarton horses are leaving earlier than usual for the Dunedin meeting. These include F. A. Roberts’s trier Kettledrum, Adaris, and Finir, which will be accompanied by Accountant. They will leave Riccarton late on Sundav night and will thus avoid less comfortable travel in the heat of the day. Finir and Psalter were to have been companions in an easy gallop over six furlongs yesterday, but. slow as tne pace was. Psalter could not keep up in tne straight. PSalter is a three-year-old brother to The McDonough and is related to Gendarme. Already he has been operated on for a wind infirmity By Foxbridge from Psalm, this gelding fetched 1950 guineas as a yearling.
