ROAD RACE AT BROMLEY
ADMISSION CHARGES NOT PERMITTED
ATTITUDE OF CITY COUNCIL
No charge for spectators on the open roads over which the Pioneer Motor Cycle Club will race at Bromley tomorrow, provided certain conditions are met, will be permitted by the City Council. The club has advertised admission charges of 2s 6d for adults and Is for children. ' The organiser of the race (Mr F. B. Spensley) was informed by letter on November 30 that the traffic committee had declined to allow-charges to be made for admission to the roads.
“The president of the club (Mr D. Soanes) was again informed today of that decision.” said the assistant-Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) yesterday afternoon. “The decision must be adhered to.” The club’s officials will meet Mr Bowie again this morning to produce satisfactory evidence that the three conditions fixed by the council on Monday have been complied with. They are:—that adequate precautions be taken for the protection of. the public; that approval be obtained from the Christchurch Fire Board; that an adequate public risk cover and fire cover be taken out and the policies produced to the Town Clerk. Mr Frank Smedley, chairman of the recent protest meeting at Bromley, alleged yesterday that the’ club was not complying with either of the conditions under which the race was approved. In advertising a charge for admission it was disobeying the instruction of the City Council and up till early yesterday afternoon the Christchurch Fire Brigade had not been approached for its consent, he said.
