ROWING

NEW ZEALAND SUCCESSES IN AUSTRALIA (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. December 17. Australians have a high respect for New Zealand rowing after the success of Auckland’s West End four and the sculler, Don Rowlands, in the New South Wales championships. Mr W. S. Wrathall, coach to the West End four, made this statement when he arrived home from Sydney by air today. He regarded the success as a pointer towards the four’s chances of representing New Zealand in next year’s British Empire Games at Vancouver. ' The Sydney four beaten by West End in the race record time of 7min J6sec for the 2000 metres is regarded as one of Australia’s best crews. It won the event last year in 7min 19sec. Tlie crew was, pleased with Rowlands’s effort in beating’ Mervyn Wood, second in the 1952 Olympic Games, and P. Evatt. But they thought V{ood would be much tougher over three miles, rather than the 2000 metres in the New South Wales championships.
