STANDARD RIFLE FOR N.A.T.O.
Adoption Of .300 Weapon PARIS, December 15. Britain, France, the United States, Belgium, and Canada today agreed to adopt the calibre .300 rifle as their standard small arms weapon. The Defence Ministers agreed on the adoption of the rifle, believed to be a Belgian model, on which extensive tests have recently been made, at this morning’s session of the Atlantic Council. Military sources said that this means that Britain’s .280 rifle has been abandoned. Among the advantages claimed for the Belgian rifle are that it can be used to fire a single round, semi-auto-matically, or as a machine-gun. and that its ammunition can also be used in light machine-guns. It is smaller and lighter than the American Garand. and is said to have accuracy and stopping power at ranges up to 1000 metres.
