MEDICAL STAFF AT HOSPITAL
APPOINTMENTS MADE So far no replacement had been obtained for Dr. J. K. Laing, formerly senior medical registrar to the North Canterbury Hospital Board, who had resigned to take up private practice in Oamaru, said the hospital committee’s report to the North Canterbury Hospital Board ypsterday. Dr. L. C. L. Averill, for the hospital committee, told the board that an application had been received for the position after the closing date for applications. After a discussion in committee, the appointment of Dr. David Pullon, of Christchurch, for one year, extensible for a further year, was announced. The appointment is subject to the approval of the Minister of Health (Mr J. R. Marshall). Dr. F. T. Shannon has been appointed junior medical registrar to the board. There were two applicants for the position. Mr T. Hurrell has been appointed junior surgical registrar for 1954. He was one of two applicants for the position. The authority of the Director-Gen-eral of Health (Dr. J. Cairney) will be sought to appoint a physicist to the staff of the radio-therapy department of the Christchurch Hospital. The finance committee, in its report, said that the Dominion X-ray and Radium Laboratory, the * medical superintendent (Dr. T. Morton), and the radiotherapist (Dr. A. J. Campbell) all strongly recommended the appointment of a physicist. “In the past, a very considerable amount of time has been devoted by the Dominion X-ray and Radium Laboratory’s physicist, and the Health Department has indicated that this service cannot continue for the future.
“The early advent of the new isotope clinic further warrants the appointment,” the committee said.
