NO REPRIEVE FOR WHITELAND

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 16. The Executive Council decided today not to interfere with the death sentence imposed earlier this month on Harry Whiteland, aged 56, a labourer. Whiteland was found guilty of murdering Dorothy Rose Haldane, aged 19, at Reefton on August 27. The Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie) made a special flight from Auckland today to attend the meeting of the Executive Council. Announcing the decision this afternoon, the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) said it had been reached after careful study of every aspect of the case, including close study of reports .by medical men and psychiatrists.
