WHISKY STOCKS
NO SHORTAGE LIKELY AT CHRISTMAS
Christchurch wine and spirits merchants do not expect any shortage of Scotch whisky over the Christmas period. When asked yesterday about the position, as there had been reports from Dunedin and Auckland that the demands there might exceed the supply, their general reply was that there were ample stocks—in fact, generally, “more than there had ever been.” All liquors are in good supply, and the only likely shortage is of lager from the North Island. Stocks of that are getting low already. Hotels, too, have no shortage of stocks, and many are advertising whisky for 30s a bottle and upwards. In Dunedin, merchants have complained that shipping has held up Christmas supplies of whisky. One ship is not due in Dunedin until after the middle of the month, which would be-too late for the shipment to reach the market before Christmas. That difficulty has not been experienced in Christchurch, for a shipment has been received in the last few days.
