LARI MASSACRE CHARGES
44 DEATH SENTENCES QUASHED NAIROBI, December 1. The Court of Appeals for Eastern Africa today quashed death sentences on 44 Kikuyu tribesmen and prison sentences on four others, all sentenced for their part in the Lari massacre of 120 Africans last March. The Court held that evidence given by the main African witness and his family identifying the men alleged to have taken part in the attack on his homestead was not trustworthy enough for conviction. Eighty-three Kikuyu were originalb’ charged. The charges against five were withdrawn, and 13 were hanged.
