AMERICAN CARS IN NEW CHINA
CHARGE MADE IN COMMONS
LONDON. December 1. The British Government has called for reports from its representative in Peking concerning allegations that the Chinese Communist capital “is as full of new American cars as Grosvenor Square.” „ The Minister of State for the Board of Trade (Mr D. Heathcoat-Amory) gave this assurance to the House of Commons today following Labour and Conservative questioning about the export trade in cars to Communist China. A Labour member. Mr Geoffrey de Freitas, asked the Minister if he was aware that recent visitors to Peking reported that the city “was as full of American cars as Grosvenor Square” (Grosvenor Square is the centre of considerable American activity in London). Mr de Freitas continued: “What is good enough for General Motors is good enough for this country. What is the Minister going to do to overtake the American lead which Senator McCarthy has established?”
