HIGHER RENTS IN BRITAIN

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, December 1. The House of Commons last night gave the Government a majority of 27 for the policy of raising rents on about 4,000,000 houses to pay for repairs. The vote was on the second reading of a bill to allow landlords to raise rents of certain houses provided repairs are carried out. The rents of these houses were fixed by law before the war, in an effort to stabilise the cost of living, but with the rise in the cost of repairs many landlords do not get enough rent to pay for them. The bill also proposes to allow local authorities to become the owners of slum property until it can be swept away.
