The Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) underwent a successful operation in Lewisham Hospital. Wellington, yesterday morning. His condition was reported to be “very satislactory.”—(P.A.) Delegates from Christchurch to the meeting of the council of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation held in Wellington yesterday were the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr J. Bradley), the vice-president of the federation (Mr F. C. Penfold), the past president of the Canterbury Association (Mr H. C. Urlwin), and the secretary (Mr R. T Alston).

During the break-up ceremony for evening classes of the Christchurch Technical College last evening, a brief case was presented tc Mr R. A. Keir by the principal (Mr D. W. Lyall). Mr Keir. who has been head of the engineering department, has been appointed a post-primary schools inspector in Auckland. The gift was from the supervisors and staff of evening and part-time classes and also the staff of the District Commissioner of Apprenticeship. On behalf of the outgoing council, the retiring president of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Society (Dr I. D. Blair), at the annual meeting last evening, presented the secretary (Mr C. R. Russell) with two books as an appreciation of his work over the last year.
