EFFECT OF WAGE ORDER

SPENDING BY LOCAL BODIES VALIDATING LEGISLATION PROMISED An undertaking that legislation would be passed next year to validate increased expenditure by local bodies as a result of the recent wage order of the Arbitration Court, has been given to the Municipal Association by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. A. Bodkin). This infor mation was given to the Christchurch City Council yesterday in a letter from the association. The council was concerned when the order was issued that the extra wages would compel a reduction of work, as local bodies are debarred from operating on overdraft. Local bodies must keep their expenditure within their estimated revenue in any one year. The president and the secretary of the Municipal Association were a deputation to the Minister with a request that he take the necessary steps to validate any excess of expenditure as a result of the wage order.
