ADDINGTON MARKET

SMALL ENTRY OF STORE SHEEP

Continued Easing In

Prices

FAT CATTLE VALUES DOWN

Though there was only a handful of store sheep yarded at Addington stock market yesterday prices continued to ease. Values for all except the best wether hoggets were back about 2s 6d a head. With freezing buyers out of the competition and butchers not competing with any zest prices for fat lambs decreased sharply by about 8s and passings were frequent. There was a slightly better market •for fat sheep. Good young prime butchers’ wethers were 2s to 3s dearer and medium-weight ewes of prime quality were firm to 2s better than last wek. Fat cattle were easier for the third week in succession. Medium-weight cattle showed a further easing of £2 a head and heavy-weight sorts were back up to £3.

STORE SHEEP After weeks of steadily increasing prices for store sheep values began to recede last week, and although there was one of the smallest yardings for montns yesterday, values went back still further. The entry totalled only 1249 head, including 825 hoggets and 424 older sheep, compared with 4328 (3328 hoggets and 1009 older sheep) last week. In comparison with recent weeks, little interest was taken in the sale. There was only a handful of buyers, and competition was at a low ebb. There is little doubt that most farmers feel that they have enough stock on hand at present with all the signs of a dry spell about them. Except for the very best sorts, which continued to sell at about late rates, wether hoggets looked to be about 2s 6d below last week’s falling prices. They made to 56s for 70 early-shorn halfbred wether hoggets in good condition; average to good lots made 46s to 50s, and others down to 41s. One hundred and fift> from D. R. M. Johnston (Clarkville),

which were passed at auction, were later sold at 525. Fourten mixed sex hoggets in the wool sold at 695, and 80 earlyshorn ewe hoggets from P. F. Ryan (Weedons) made to 80s. The yarding of older sheep was small, and of mixed sorts, and there was only a limited demand. A line of 27 shorn ewes of medium quality, with 28 very good lambs, fetched 44s 6d, all counted. They were from M. T. Titeman (Harewood). The only other lot of ewes and lambs sold for 38s. There were a few pens of shorn ewes in good condition. Thirty-one four-tooth Romneys from L. G. Skurr (Oxford) made 655; 66 four, six and eighttooths, from E. A. Foster (Amberley) sold at 59s after being passed at auction at that price, and 66 three-shears from Halswell sold at from 54s to 575. There were only a handful of wethers in the offering. FAT LAMBS The demand for fat lambs was very weak, and prices fell by as much as 8s a head on last week’s values. A large number of the entry of 432 were passed. With the premium payments on early lambs, freezing companies have sufficient supplies by taking a proportion of their clients’ lambs, and as a result, freezing buyers did not operate in the saleyards. Butchers’ requirements appeared to be small, and selling was still difficult. The top price was 69s 7d for the best of 10 from J. Griffiths (Halswell). Prime

lambs sold to 61s Id, medium to 57s Id, with light down to 50s Id. Representative sales were: — H. Matson and Company sold; on account of W. S. Womer (Southbridge), 9 at 53s Id to 54s 7d; E. FAT SHEEP With a smaller entry—3B3s head against 4618—the market for fat sheep was a little stronger than last week, when values for wethers in particular slumped badly. There was an improvement, particularly for good young prime butchers’ wethers, which were 2s to 3s dearer than a week ago. Plainer and older wethers were

nevertheless still very hard to cuit, but, ! if anything, they were slightly" firmer. , There was also not much demand for • extra heavy and over-fat wethers, and 1 satisfactory prices were hard to obtain for these, the demand being for sheep of prime medium-weight quality. Towards . the end of the sale it seemed as though ‘ prices might ease, but outside competition caused the market to end on a firm note. There was a sound sale for ewes, -which i came forward in only small numbers. Medium-weight ewes of prime quality i met with an excellent sale and were fully firm to 2s a head dearer than last week. Heavy ewes and over-fat ewes sold on about a par with last week. All classes of hoggets met a sound sale, particularly good prime butchers’ sorts. With outside ■ competition, values for hoggets also held fully firm throughout the sale.

Hoggets made to 87s Id for one from D Long (Harewood) and 75s Id for the tops of 18 from A. M. Cameron (Ladbrooks), which .sold from 71s Id. Wethers from C. C. Prebble (Winchmore) made to

FAT CATTLE There was a heavy yarding of fat cattle totalling 698 head, compared with 588 last week. The entry included a large number of good-quality steers, for which there was again a downward trend in values. Heifers were not yarded in such numbers as at recent sales, and the cow entry contained a large number of Jersey cross caws, which were difficult to sell. The steer entry was one of the best for some time, but for the third week in succession values eased by £2 a head, in spite of competition in the market by butchers from South Canterbury and North Otago.

Prime cows decreased in value by £2 to £2 10s a head on last week, but the Jersey cross cows were not wanted. Prices for these ranged from £l5 to £2O. The top price for steers was £52 7s 3d for one of four from O. A. Williams (Port Levy). T. S. Craw (Chorlton) sold one of five heifers for £42 12s 6d, and Mannings Brothers (Heathcote) topped the cow market with a single entry at £37 12s 6d. STORE CATTLE The store cattle entry was much smaller than last week, but consisted of a number of pens of steers in good condition and a large line of breeding cows from the Lands and Survey Department (Molesworth). No quotable lines of station yearling cattle came forward. Some excellent adult steers were yarded and prices were generally on a par with last week for the best. Others may have been £1 a head cheaper. The top price was obtained for 17 Aberdeen Angus steers from Ward, which made from £34 18s 6d to £37 Is. Hereford steers made up to £34 18s 6d for the best of a line of 16, which made from £33 Is to the top price. Twenty Hereford steers from Amberley made from £32 18s 6d to £34 Eighteen months old cattle made to £3l 13s 6d for seven Aberdeen Angus steers in excellent condition. Two pens of Hereford heifers, totalling 21 head were yarded. These made from £27 18s 6d to £3O 18s 6d. These prices were much better than values for breeding heifers last week. Fifty->six Aberdeen Angus and Hereford breeding cows from Molesworth station attracted a fair demand. They had come forward in very hard condition and had

been running with bulls since January. The top price was £24 13s 6d for seven Aberdeen Angus cows, and others of similar breeding made down to £2O 18s ! 6d. Another lot of 10 were passed. ■ Twenty-three Herefords were included in the line, and these made from £24 Is • to £24 8s 6d.

: DAIRY CATTLE i There were about 40 head of mixed- . quality cows in the dairy cattle section. ; With, farmers busy hay making, the at- , tendance of buyers was small. Except i for odd, good Friesian cows and heifers, values were about £1 to 30s below last ; week’s rates, and there were odd pass- > ings. Apart from a registered Friesian cow, ’ which sold for 51 guineas, values were: best second, third, and fourth calvers, t £3O to £36, with a few sales of Friesians to £47; and, others, £l6 to £2B. Best J heifers sold from £33 to £3B, with one . sale at £5O. Small and inferior sold | down to £l5 10s. FAT PIGS

The porker entry was one of the largest this season, and consisted mainly of good quality sorts. The sale opened with values on a par with last week, but over the latter half of the sale values eased by 5s to 7s a head. In the chopper section, the entry was a fairly heavy one, and contained a fair proportion of overweight, over-fat baconers. Choppers sold well at last week’s parity, but over-fat baconers were easier by about 30s to £2 a head. In the bacon section, with a medium entry, all good quality pigs commanded .'good competition. but the over-fat types were definitely not wanted.

Values were:— Light porkers, £5 15s 6d to £6 14s 6d. Medium porkers, £6 19s 6d to £7 14s 6d. Heavy porkers, £7 19s 6d to £8 7s 6d. Choppers, £8 8s 6d to £l6 18s 6d. Light baconers, £9 3s 6d to £lO 3s 6d.

Medium baconers, £lO 6s 6d to £ll 4s 6d. Heavy baconers, £ll 8s 6d to £l2 3s 6d. STORE PIGS The entry in the store pig section was much smaller than last week, and consisted largely of weaners and small stores. The attendance of buyers was also much smaller, but competition for best classes was very- good, last week’s rates being practically maintained. For other sorts the market was easier by 5s to 10s per head. Values were:— Small weaners, 54s to 60s. Best weaners, 65s to 755. Slips, 80s to 90s. Small stores, 91s to 100 s. Medium stores 105 s to 110 s. Large stores, 115 s to 120 s.
