STOCK EXCHANGES

AUSTRALIAN SHARES WEAKER

In another fairly heavy day’s trading on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, price movements of most stocks dealt in moved in buyers’ favour. These variations, however, were nearly all confined to Australian-domiciled shares. No appreciable falls were registered, and business was widely spread. New Zealand Government securities continued to interest buyers, no fewer than seven parcels changing hands, and at the close of the day the demand continued to remain unsatisfied. Another feature of the day’s operations was the complete absence of transactions in Bank of New South Wales rights. There was no lack of buyers at the firm rate of £7 9s 6d. but sellers remained off the market. Buyers quoted £3O 7s 6d for the same bank’s shares without attracting sellers. New Zealand Refrigerating paids had sales at the steady price of 37s 6d, and more were wanted at 37s 3d—no sellers. New Zealand Insurance sold unchanged at £6, the market closing with buyers at £5 19s 6d and sellers at £6 Is. Woollens, as well as insurances, had strong buying inquiry, and Lane, Walker, Rudkin ordinaries advanced to sales at 565, with more on offer at 58s. Woolworths, Ltd., had sales and buyers at the reduced price of 14s 9d. and further sellers were 2d away. Woolworths (New Zealand) did not come close to business, with buyers at 18s 3d and sellers at 19s. Coles suffered in the general decline of Australian shares, when they were traded 3d down at 16s 6d, and the market showed signs of being weaker at the close,-with buying bids of 16s 3d and sellers at 16s 9d. McKenzies had unsupported cum dividend sellers at 16s 3d. DOMINION TRANSACTIONS CHRISTCHURCH Sales on Change, Listed £ s. d. Var’n.
