STATE FLATS TO BE BUILT

THREE STOREY BLOCKS

TRIAL IN AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON (New Zealand. Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2. The Government is to build two three-storey blocks of flats—one at Wellington and the other at Auckland. Each will contain 18 flats and they will be let to those who would norinally qualify for State houses. Consideration is also being given to the erection of 10-storey blocks in the larger centres. The Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan), announcing this today, said the trial scheme for Auckland and Wellington would demonstrate to local authorities and private investors that flats could be built economically at today’s prices. The 18 flats in each of the two blocks could be built at less cost than houses to accommodate a similar number of people, he said. House-building must continue as expeditiously as possible, the Minister said. Every effort was being made in that direction, but there were many arguments in favour of building flats —on economic grounds and because of the better use of land, services and transport. After considering all the factors, it was decided to erect the blocks at Wellington and Auckland by way of a trial.
