GERALDINE LINEN FLAX FACTORY
REPRESENTATIONS ON POSSIBLE CLOSURE
"That hr view of rumours circulating about the possible closure of the Geraldine linen flax factory, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Industries and Commerce be requested that all possible steps be taken to tide the industry over its difficult period in the interests of the workers, businessmen and farmers of the Geraldine district,” said a resolution passed at a meeting in Geraldine this week. The Mayor (Mr P. H. Davis) presided, and those present included the president of the Geraldine branch of Federated Farmers (Mr M. H. Askin), the president of the Geraldine (Businessmen's Association (Mr H. W. Williamson) and the chairman of the Geraldine Linen Flax Growers’ Committee (Mr J. Guerin). Reasons advanced for keeping the factory in operation included the capital involved in the factory, the value of linen flax as a means of bringing second-class land into production, and the possible importance of the industry in the event of an “international emergency.”
