STAR ROSA AND MAGELLAN

ADDINGTON WINNERS CLOSELY RELATED

Magellan and Star Rosa, two decisive winners at Addington last Saturday, are closely related. Magellan is a four-year-old entire by the Austra-lian-bred stallion, Andy Derby, from Gamblette, while Star Rosa is by Gamble from Star Ace. Gamblette, which did not race, was by Gamble from Nanette, and she is a naif-sister to Star Ace. a good winner, which was got by Nelson Derby. Nanette was also the dam of Privateer, Fragment, Knave of Diamonds, Radical, and Czardas. She was by Author Dillon from Llama, tracing back to Polly, a mare supposed to be a thoroughbred. Polly is the ancestress of a host of winners in New Zealand, including Gold Ear. Magellan, which is trained by O. E. Hooper at Harewood for his son, O. E. Hooper, jun., of Rakaia, is a fine type of young pacer and he will be one of the favourites for the President’s Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. He was most impressive when he outclassed the opposition in the Churchill Handicap on Saturday and his win was some compensation for his second to Black Douglas on the first day of the meeting and his third to Rupee and Scottish Brigade in the New Zealand Metropolitan Challenge Stakes on the second day. Magellan can both sprint and stay, but he has been on awkward, marks in some of his races. He looks handily placed on the front on Saturday and may win again. Star Rosa, surprise winner of the Smithson Handicap on Saturday, is a half-sister to Mayenga and a threequarter sister to Titania. She is a grand type of mare and has been a good winner for her owner-trainer, R. A. Hamilton, of Halswell. She is now assessed at 4min 24sec for two miles and is eligible for the rich Auckland Cup, to be run later this month. However, her racing days are numbered as she has been mated with the Logan Derby stallion, Johnny Globe. Star Rosa is one of the best-looking mares trained at Addington and she should prove most valuable at the stud. Well Related Golden Present, a candidate for the New Zealand Oaks at New Brighton on Saturday, should be more than useful. She is a chestnut filly by Gold Chief from Homelover, a Jack Potts mare, which left a high-class performer a few seasons ago in Gough’s Pride. Golden Present is raced by Mrs E. D. Haley and trained at New Brighton by F. C. Bodger. Drivers’ School Mr A. G. Green will give an address on the head of the horse at the drivers’ school at Addington on Tuesday. Probationary drivers will have a race at the trials to be run at New Brighton next Monday. The race will again be watched by members of tile New Zealand Horsemen’s Association, who will comment after the race on any mistakes made by the drivers. Veteran Pacer Grattan Tower had a long-overdue win in his division of the Mokoreta Trial at Wyndham on Saturday. After being headed by D’ x verity at the furlong, he came again to win by a neck. Grattan Tower is now a 10-year-old, but he did not start racing until towards the end of last season. He is well related, being by Grattan Loyal from Modestine, by Frank Worthy. He is closely related to Adorian, Bayard, Admiration, Forward, and others. Won for New Owners Rocky Reef gained his first win for his new owners, Messrs R. A. McKenzie, of Wellington, and A. T. Cartwright, of Christchurch, when he beat Pleasant News and Sandos in the Eastbrook Handicap on the first day of the Wanganui Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. He was making his first appearance since joining J. S. Hunter’s team at Lower Hutt. Rocky Reef is a six-year-old by Gold Bar from Rocks Ahead, and he was formerly raced by Mrs M. Rice, of Invercargill. Maori Home’s Brother Maori Lad, which had shown good form as a three-year-old two seasons ago, returned to form with a most convincing win in the First Mercan”le Handicap at the Wyndham Trotting Club's meeting on Saturday. He finished on boldly and won easily by a length from Lucky Cast and Bon Marche. Bred by Mr M. Ischia and trained at Gore by C. C. Scott, Maori Lad is a five-year-old by Dillon Hall from Native Home, the dam also of Maori Home. Maori Lad appears to have become most solid now, and he should carry on to good class in the next few months. Promising Trotter Ballarian, which has had two wins and one placing from three starts this season, looks as though she may develop into a useful trotter with more experience. She has little to recommend her on the score of breeding as, apart from being by Quite Sure from Random Harvest, she is very' short-bred. Random Harvest was got by Peter Bingen from a mare by Diadem. Ballarian was most impressive on Saturday when she won the Brydone Handicap at Wyndham from Fencer and, had she been asked for a serious effort, would have won more easily than the official margin of three-quarters of a length. Fairway Consistent Fairway added to his consistent record when he won the Hunter Handicap at Wyndham on Saturday. Ice Drift attempted to put a winning break on the field at the straight entrance, but Fairway finished too well over the last 100 yards. Fairway has raced most consistently this season for his Forbury Park owner-trainer, A. J. Osmand, who is caretaker of the course, and in seven starts he has had two wins and three placings for £755 in stakes. Fairway is a five-year-old gelding by Wayfarer from Jacana, by Jack Potts from Pattie Bingen. He is closely related to North Island winners in Sisely Wood and Flambeau. Fairway may not go far, but he should continue to pay his way in his present class. To Race in Australia Rodina and Oban left Auckland recently for Australia, where they will be campaigned over the holidays. Rodina, a half-sister by Direct Heir to Inquisitive Lady, was a winner last season when trained by her owner, A. Rhodes, at New Brighton. She was taken to Australia by M. C. Moran, who has had considerable success over the years in Australia. Heather Brigade and Prince Volomite are recent winners in the Sydney area. They were taken over by him. Oban, which will race in the interests of Mr M J. Moodabe, of Auckland, has shown considerable promise as a trotter, although he has not had much success. It should not be hard to place him to advantage in Australia. Answer to Correspondent ’’lnquiry,” City: Johnny Globe had only one win as a three-year-old before he won the New Zealand Derby Stakes. That was at New Brighton, when he beat Diligent in the Introductory Handicap. He was placed in the Riccarton Stakes, won by Adorian.
