STARRING OF HOTELS

Sir, —To any tourists, “starring” of hote’s must be confusing as regards quality, if one takes the standard of the Wellington hotels & five stars and compares that with the same starring in other centres. Why should there be so much difference? Does it mean that each city chooses its best hotel and advocates five stars? Recently, in one town, I found a three-star hotel very much better than that marked as a four-star. Either the Wellington fivestar hotels are entitled to further stars or the others should be brought to the Wellington standard. Would it not be more appropriate to wipe out the stars altogether for hotels with licence to give them the sign of so many X’s? —Yours, etc., TOURIST. December 2, 1953.
