(Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Dec. 1. Tony Trabert, the United States Cup player, lost his quarter-final ot the Victorian tennis championship, to the 24-year-old Victorian, Rex Hartwig. Hartwig won, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

In the other men’s singles quarterfinal the last of the Americans was eliminated from the singles championship’s when Lewis Hoad beat Bill Talbert, 6-3, 9-7, 4-6, 6-4.

Hartwig, who is in the Australian Davis Cup squad, played brilliantly off the ground, and volleyed too well for Trabert, whose mistimed rushes to the net were the biggest contribution to his defeat. Trabert seemed over-anxious, and was frequently passed. His timing improved in the second set, and he reached the net faster, but the third and fourth sets were repetitions of the first, with the American fighting to hold his service
