NEXT GENERAL ELECTION
LABOUR PARTY CANDIDATES THREE CHRISTCHURCH SEATS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 1. Labour candidates for the next General Election for the three Christchurch seats not held by the party were announced today by the secretary of the New Zealand Labour Party, Mr A. J. McDonald. The candidates are: Fendalton, Mr Roy H. McDonald, aged 26, a trade union secretary; Lyttelton. Mr T. M. McGuigan, aged 32, a public accountant; St. Albans, Mr Michael Connelly, aged 37,- a public servant, and a son of Mr M. Connelly, who was a member of the Legislative Council from 1936 to 1950. Mr R. H. McDonald - was educated at the Lyall Bay School, and the Wellington Technical College. He was elected secretary of the Canterbury District Council of the New Zealand Federation of Labour in 1950. and has been a member of the New Zealand Clerical Workers’ Association’s national executive and an executive member of the Canterbury Clerical Workers’ Union. Mr McDonald is a member of the Papanui Technical College Board of Managers, and member-secretary of the Christchurch Vocational Guidance Centre advisory committee. . Mr McGuigan is secretary and accountant to a Christchurch furniture firm. Educated at the Opawa School and Christchurch Boys’ High School, he was an officer in the Navy during World War 11, and since then has taken part in many Labour Party activities, as well as affairs in Opawa and Woolston.
Secretary of the Woolston branch of the Labour Party, Mr McGuigan is also delegate to the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee and the Lyttelton Electoral Council. He is also secretary of the Canterbury Football Association and a member of the management committee.
Mr Connelly is financial adviser on investments and company valuations for the Inland Revenue Department. After serving for more than six years with the Royal New Zealand Air Force during World War 11, during which time he was commissioned from the ranks, he graduated bachelor of commerce at Otago University in 1948. He is secretary of the Shirley branch of the Labour Party.
He is also a delegate to the Christchurch Labour Representation Committee and the St. Albans Electoral Council.
Mr N. E. Kirk, who has been selected as Labour Party candidate for the Hurunui seat, is one of New Zealand’s youngest mayors. At 30 years of age. he is Mayor of Kaiapoi. A stationary engine-driver by occupation, he is the fifth generation of his family to live in the Kaiapoi district. Born in Waimate, Mr Kirk was educated in Christchurch. For five years he worked in the dairy industry in the Bay of Plentv, and for 18 months in the Hauraki Plains. He is now in his second year as president of the Hurunui Labour Representation Committee.
