ESTIMATES OF UNIVERSITY
HIGHER INCOME NEXT YEAR The Canterbury University College Council will have a heavier budget in 1954, and although income is expected to be about £BOOO more than this year, the estimated surplus for all contingencies will be only £ 1000. The chairman of the finance committee (Mr C. H. Perkins) made this announcement yesterday when the estimates were considered by the council. Because figures are still being adjusted. Mr Perkins made a general statement of “round figures” in open meeting and details, which will be discussed with the University Grants Committee, were taken in committee. Estimated income for 1954 was £175,453, Mr Perkins said, the bulk coming from the Government in a general purposes grant of £131.000 Another £23.000 3 in students’ fees would also come largely from the Government by way of bursaries and other assistance. Endowment income after deducing expenses would be about £12,000. Salaries would be the biggest expenditure, the net figure being £92,255, and the maximum £97.836. Both estimates were required by the Grants Committee, Mr Pferkins said, to cover promotions and appointments the council would like to make if possible. Working equipment, at £13,008, was another large item. Maintenance was set at £6OOO. Cleaning and caretaking and similar overhead expenses accounted for the surprising figure of £4BOO. It was hoped to set £lOOO aside for repairs at “Okeover” and other buildings on the site at Riccarton. The unallocated £lOOO surplus could all be taken in meeting hostel deficits.
