GREYMOUTH HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION
PETITION DISMISSED FOR LACK OF PROSECUTION (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, November 30. The presiding Magistrate (Mr C. C. Marsack, S.M.) declined leave to petitioners to withdraw their petition seeking an inquiry into the recent election of three borough representatives on the Greymouth Harbour Board, but the petition was formally dismissed for want of prosecution. The Magistrate ordered the petitioners’ deposit of £lO to be forfeited, and allowed £6 6s of the amount to the respondent, W. M. Steer, as costs. The balance will go to the Crown. The petition, signed by 10 electors of Greymouth, sought a magisterial inquiry under the Local Elections and Polls Act, 1953. into the harbour board election. It alleged that Mr Steer—who topped the poll on October 31 — did not possess the necessary qualifications to be a candidate because his name did not appear on the roll of electors, and asked that Kenneth Harvey Sara, the fourth and only unsuccessful candidate, should be declared elected in place of Mr Steer. The petitioners did not appear in Court this morning, but they were represented by Mr J. K. Patterson, of Reefton. The respondent was represented by Mr J. W. Hannan, and with him Mr A. M. Jamieson, .
