N.S.W. BILL TO CURB PRESS
WITHDRAWAL “WHEN PURPOSE SERVED’’
SYDNEY, November 28. ITie New South Wales Premier (Mr J. J. Cahill) has said that the Sydney City Council (Disclosure of Allegations) Bill will be withdrawn once the particular purpose for which it was brought in is achieved. The bill has been described as the ‘Gag the Public” Bill. Mr Cahill said: “If the effect of this bill is to secure for the Government that information which is alleged to be in the possession of certain newspapers end individuals, the measure will have served its purpose.” A. message from London Says the Daily Express” in a leading article has criticised the bill. . “It is an intolerable measure, striking a blow at freedom everywhere,” the-newspaper said. “Australia may seem a long way away. But remember this: Ideas take no account of distance. “A defeat for press freedom in Australia will hearten evil men in all countries who fear the press as a guardian of liberty and a barrier to their own ambitions.”
