NIUE ISLAND MURDER
CONVICTS TO BE RETURNED STATEMENT BY MINISTER (Woo Zgatand Ft«m Aaoctottonji AUCKLAND, November 28. The. three Niue Islanders sentenced to death for the jnurder of the Resident Commissioner (Mr C. H, W. Larsen) win be returned to Niue. The Minister of Justice (Mr T. C. Webb) said today in a telephone interview from Wellington that the prisoners, Latoatama, aged 21, FoKtolu, aged 25, and Tamaeli, aged 18, who are being held in Auckland prison, would be flown by the R.N.Z.A.F. to Tonga. From there the island's motor vessel, Tofua, would take them to Niue. The Tofua was expected at Tonga on Monday or Tuesday, said the Minister, and the prisoners would reach Niue about Friday. Mr Webb said it was questionable whether the Government was justified in retaining the prisoners here. The full Court had dismissed their appeals against conviction and the Executive Council would decide whether the death sentence would be carried out. Should execution be decided, on then, under law, it must be carried out at Niue. Pending the decision, the prisoners would be held in gaol at Niue, said Mr Webb.
