SHOP’S CHRISTMAS STOCK BURNT
EARLY MORNING FIRE IN STOREROOM (New Zealand Press Association) „ , HASTINGS, November 28. Hundreds of pounds worth of Christmas stock, a portion of it already purchased by customers on a “lay-by” system, was destroyed by fire early this morning in the premises of C. H. Bunker and Company, stationers and fancy goods dealers, next to the Albert Hotel, Heretaunga street, Hastings. Some damage was done to the rear of the shop, but the outbreak was mainly confined to a storeroom at the back of the premises. A nightwatchman gave the alarm shortly after 2 a.m., when flames and spoke were bursting through a skylight. The brigade had the blaze under control in 10 minutes. The store was packed with stock. Expensive mechanical toys, perambulators, tricycles, dolls, and many other Christmas novelties were charred and * n many instances completely ruined. Although the fire loss is covered by insurance, the firm will be a heavy loser, for it was heavily stocked in readmess for Christmas, and it will n °L • e P° ssi We to replace much of it within the four shopping weeks before Christmas.
