NEW CASHMERE HOSPITAL

USE OF COAL FOR HEATING COUNCIL REITERATES OPPOSITION The Heathcote County Council's opposition to the proposal to use coal for steam generation at the new Casnn.ere Hospital, which it considers wi uld create a smoke nuisaned, was reiterated at a meeting of the council last evening. It was decided to advise the North Canterbury Hospital Board chat the council’s attitude was unchanged. A letter was received from the board saying that the board was examining the possibility of an alternative method of steam generation which, if successful, might eliminate altogether the possibility of a smoke nuisance.

Cr. R. A. Young said he considered the new council should, like the old one, be united in its view that a smoke stack should not be erected. He said he was concerned to read in the newspapers the debate in Parliament about the generation arrangements for the hospital, and, in the same paper, to read about the issuing of masks in London to combat the smoke menace. Mr Freeman said that a copy of tne council’s letter to the board setting out its opposition to a coal-burning plant had been sent to the member of Parliament for the district (Mr H. R. Lake):

“We don’t seem to have Mr Lake on our side, do we?” said Cr. Amyes. The board’s letter was received.
