GREYMOUTH CLUB
RACING
DEMAND MAY RACE WELL OUR TREASURE FOR SECOND LEG The Riccarton horses, Demand and Our Treasure, are expected to race prominently in the legs of the double at the opening of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Omoto today. Demand is handily handicapped at 7-9 for the Stewards’ Hack Handicap, one mile, the first leg. A capable five-year-old son of Defaulter and Manahau, he will be making his second appearance for the season, his other start being at Riccarton last August. He is generally at his best when fresh, and the field he will meet today does not include a great deal of talent. The top-weight, Gold Stage, which has raced well for two wins and a second from three starts this season, will be solidly supported, and she should offer the strongest opposition to Demand. Gold Stage is a double acceptor, however, and appears to hold an even better winning chance in her alternative engagement. Double Paper, Farleigh, and Owl’s Way are others with prospects for the first leg. Our Treasure will have only to reproduce her winning run at Motukarara last month to be very hard to beat in the second leg, the Flying Hack Handicap, of six furlongs and a half. The Treasure Hunt filly’s Motukarara success was over five furlongs, but on the Omoto course, she should have little difficulty in lasting the extra furlong and a half.
Accountant, which has seldom run a bad race this season, and Convair, an impressive sprint winner at Reefton last week, are other favoured runners for this event. Miss Meteor and Atlantic Queen are two that should also add interest to the contest.
Robbie May Win Robbie appears to hold a strong chance of winning the main race, the Hannan Memorial Handicap, over one mile. His impressive recovery to win at Reefion last week after making a bad start entitles him to solid support in the small field he’ will meet today. Entrancing and Roanne are also expected to race well.
If Gold Stage takes her place in the Metropolitan Hack Handicap field, she will probably be favourite. She won over the same distance (10 furlongs) at the Reefton meeting, and should be hard to beat again. Prim Lady was a fast-finishing second at Reef ton, after drifting in the middle stages of the race. If she is better placed in the running today, the Rhodes Scholar mare will make Gold Stage’s task far from. easy. Weewyn, which raced well at the Cup meeting at Riccarton, and Elsie Mary and Wise Belle, which showed good form at the Reefton meeting, should also be prominent. In an open field for the Otira Hack Handicap, Tarawingee has perhaps the best prospect of winning. At Reefton the Beau Vite mare showed she is right at her best with an effortless win over seven furlongs. Canyon Maid, also a winner at Reefton, and Teal, which secured a good second at that meeting, will provide strong opposition to Tarawingee. Super Duper and Incredible should also take part m the finish.
Airspin and Air Comfort, which both raced well at Reef ton, are selected to do best in their divisions of the Novice Stakes.
Rain fell during the week at Omolo, but the weather there was perfect yesterday. At the worst, the track will be easy. Selections are:— Noon.—Novice Stakes: First Division— Airspin, Teresa Gamba. Second Division— Air Comfort, Silver Sandal.
