FINANCES OF N.Z. ASSOCIATION

GOLT

ANNUAL SURPLUS OF £6OO AIMED AT ECONOMIES TO BE MADE IN TOURNAMENT EXPENSES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 27. Finance was the greatest concern at today’s annual meeting of the New Zealand Golf Association, when the report of a special sub-committee was heard on measures necessary to convert a deficit of £229 on last year’s working into an annual surplus of £6OO.

The association was faced with the difficulty of financing overseas tours and visits to New Zealand by teams from elsewhere, without depriving the back-markers of their fair share of the money spent on golf, it was said. Reporting on behalf of the sub-committee, Mr H. A. Hensen (Wellington) said that the committee was resolutely opposed to cutting into the amount, available to district associations to be spent on the rank-and-file golfers. Instead, it proposed economies in national tournament expenses and in the Freyberg rosebowl tournament, in the amount spent on trophies, and in one or two other directions. By tightening up the association’s expenditure it should be possible to show a surplus of £6OO a year. Fund Of £3OOO Needed The committee also thought that the accumulated fund, should be kept in the vicinity of £3000; less would give too small a margin to finance overseas tours and there would be no specific object in accumulating more.-

The meeting accepted the report and recommended the council to investigate the proposals, and also to set up a special fund for financing overseas tours. Mr G. P. Roberts said that of the money coming into the association by levy on the golfers of New Zealand, £l7OO was spent on the back-markers through the district associations and £l2OO on the tournament golfer. He did not think any further encroachment should be made on the money available for the ordinary golfer. Officers elected for the coming year were.— Patron, the Governor-General (Sir. Willoughby Norrie); president. Mr J. H. Meek (Otago); vice-presidents. Messrs F. C. Freyer and C. G. Penlington; elective council members, Messrs P. J. Burke, G Freeman. G. P. Roberts. D. R. Richmond, and D. O. Whyte; appointed members, Messrs A. R. Blank. E. R. Coote, L. J. Fisher. K. S. Glendinning, H. A. Hansen. V. C. Hollis. B. H. Menzies, J. A. Scouler.
